The Yoga Den will be offering a discount on their Thursday night Men’s Naked Yoga session, $10 for Hoedown attendees instead of the usual $15.  This runs from 7:00–8:30 pm, leaving plenty of time to stop by the Cuff for Country Karaoke before the dance starts at Century Ballroom.  Get your body warmed up for a weekend of dancing!  A group will leave from the hotel lobby at 6:30 pm, or get there on your own.

Jonathan’s popular Thursday night karaoke at the Cuff (Rain Country’s home bar) will be country themed tonight.  Get yourself a slot in the song rotation before heading to the Century Ballroom for dancing.  And you might have enough fun that you won’t want to leave!

 8:00 PM–9:30 pm

Women’s Meet & Greet (Tin Table)

Join other women attending this year’s hoedown for dinner and drinks before the Trail-In Dance at the Tin Table restaurant right next door to our dance hall, on the 2nd floor of the Odd Fellows Beuilding.   This is a trans*-inclusive event; if you feel that you should be at the Women’s Meet & Greet, we are happy to have you there.  Lipsky is your host for this event.

Making Lines & Hitting Breaks • All Levels

Room: Madison A
Instructor: Wen Minkoff & Tara Walsh

Wen and Tara aren’t just dance instructors, they are also dance competitors.  You may not realize that a lot of what you learn as a competitor translates to the social dance floor (and vice versa).  As a competitor, you focus not only on what the next move or pattern is, but also on “telling the story” with your dance — in particular, dancing with the music to make use of accents and breaks and style changes in it to inform and enhance your dancing, to take it up a level.  Come learn how to apply this to all your dancing!

West Coast Swing: There Ain’t Nothing Like A Good Hard Tuckin’ • Intermediate

Room: Madison B & C
Instructor: Johnny Q

The tuck is an oft-neglected core move that uses all the “secret” aspects of swing movement, including frame manipulation, connection, and syncopated rhythm.  And it feels tuckin great!  This class will be a kama sutra of ways to tuck, and how to use symmetry more generally in all your swing moves.  This class is for intermediate level swingers or above.  Solid basics, please, so we can get to the good stuff!  :)

Progressive Two-Step (QQSS): Riding The Rails Keeps The Engine On Track • Intermediate

Room: Madison B & C
Instructor: Johnny Q

The key to a great two step dance is to know where you’re going, manipulating the partnership frame, and transmitting confidence to your partner.  Effective use of the rails does that and solves many potential problems long before they occur by letting you both know where you ought not to be.  And, voila!: more safety, more fun, and more joy, at higher speed.  This class is for intermediate level two-steppers or above.  Solid basics, please, so we can get to the good stuff!  :)

 Morning

Brunch on Your Own

Rather than launch right into another full day of workshops, we want to give you time to recover and recharge, and maybe check out a bit of early spring in Seattle.

The hotel’s own restaurant, Maxwell’s, will be open for a traditional American breackfast/brunch menu.  And of course, those staying at the hotel can charge the bill to their room.

Have you ever done dim sum (Chinese brunch) with a bunch of country-western dancers?  I’d say it’s high time that you did!  Served family style from steam carts rolled through the restaurant, dim sum is quick, filling, and quite different if you haven’t had it before.  Steamed pork buns, shrimp balls, Chinese broccoli, chicken shu mai, mango pudding, custard buns… nom nom nom.  O’Asian Kitchen (about a 5 minute walk from the hotel) is convenient and social.  Divvied up amongst the table, expect a bill of about $20– per person.  Not included in your weekend registration.

For a more upscale brunch, with an Italian influence, Tulio is also just 5 minutes away.  Check out their menu, and expect a bill abut $20–25 per person (more with a bloody mary, of course!).

 10:30 AM–3:30 PM

Sala via Merengue • Intro/All Levels

Room: Madison A
Instructor: Ruin

Salsa is fun, sexy, and fast.  It can be quite a challenge, keeping up with the music while executing some of the fancier steps and wraps, not to mention applying good lead-and-follow skills.  In this combo class, learn foundational latin dance technique and patterns via Salsa’s simpler and slower cousin, the Merengue, and then learn how to execute those patterns in the faster & more intricate Salsa.

Waltz • Basic/Basic-Plus

Room: Madison B & C
Instructor: Rob Ollander-Krane

Never country waltzed before or just want to add some polish to your basic country waltz skills?  Join us for basic/basic-plus country waltz class.  We will cover the steps (and a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), what makes the dancers look like they go up and down (or as one instructor calls it “butch, nellie, nellie, butch, nellie, nellie”), the importance of frame, and how to execute lovely couples turns.  By the end of the lesson, you will forever be the belle of the ball.

 1:30–2:30 pm

Fox Trot into East Coast Swing • Intro/All Levels

Room: Madison A
Instructor: Ruin

Fox Trot is an exceptionally useful dance to know, as it is simple and gets you around the floor with ease.  East Coast Swing and Fox Trot are danced to similar music, and use the same rhythms.  So combining the two is a natural next step.  But why would you want to combine these two stand-alone dances?  Because dance floors get crowded!  Learn how to transition between Fox Trot and East Coast Swing, and never find yourself at a standstill on the dance floor again!

Two-Step: Adding Stretch & Spring • Intermediate

Room: Madison B & C

Have you ever seen dancers whose two-step looks extremely connected, effortless, and dynamic?  Who seem totally in synch? They are relaxed and never seem to be struggling to keep up with the music.  You can do that, too!  Add stretch and spring into your two step using fun, connected, socially leadable patterns.

Key for Dance Levels
Couples Dances
Line Dances
(True) Beginner: These workshops are for people who have very little or no dance experience.  In addition to basic dance steps, we will cover basic concepts such as Rhythm, Frame, Connection, and Lead/Follow.
Beginner: These are easier, shorter dances, great for people with little line dance experience but fun for dancers of all levels.
Examples: Tease, Country As Can Be, Something In The Water
Basic: Dancers at this level are learning/mastering the basic steps of the dance and the set of standard moves which higher level dancing requires.  Most workshops outside our Rain Country core dances are this level.
Beginner-Plus: These dances are a little longer and more complex, including more turns and simple syncopations.
Examples: Dizzy, Tush Push, Wonderland Waltz
Intermediate: Most people who do a dance regularly are in this broad category.  You will learn more dance technique and fancier moves, but everything will be suitable for regular social dancing.
Intermediate: These dances often have many direction changes, faster music, different syncopation rhythms, and maybe even a tag or a restart.
Examples: Georgia Winder, Make U Sweat, Multiply
Advanced: Here is where we get into subtler dance techniques, complex dance moves, rhythm changes, and so on.  Some content from these workshops may not be usable in all social dance settings.
Intermediate-Plus: These are the most complex dances that are suitable for large groups of line dancers.  Everything from Intermediate and more.
Examples: Chill Factor, Show Me Wot U Got
